How to convert binary to octal

  1. 01

Group in threes from the right

Pad the leftmost group with zeros if it is short: 11010 becomes 011 010.

  2. 02

    Convert each group

Each 3-bit group is one digit from 0 to 7. The places are worth 4, 2 and 1, so 011 is 3 and 010 is 2.

  3. 03

    Write the digits in order

11010 is 32 in octal, and 26 in decimal.

Examples

A few conversions with their groups:

  • 111 is 7, the largest single octal digit.
  • 1000 is 10 in octal: pad it to 001 000.
  • 11111111 (255) is 377 in octal: 011 111 111.
  • 111101101 is 755, the file permission setting rwxr-xr-x on Linux and macOS.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert binary to octal?

Split the binary into groups of 3 bits from the right, padding the leftmost group with zeros, then replace each group with its digit from 0 to 7. For example, 101110 is 101 110, which is 56 in octal.

What is 111 in octal?

111 is 7 in octal, and 7 in decimal too: 4 + 2 + 1. It is the largest value one octal digit can hold.

Why group binary in threes for octal?

Octal is base 8, and 8 is 2 to the power of 3, so every octal digit stands for exactly 3 bits. The conversion becomes a lookup with no arithmetic, the same way binary to hex uses groups of 4.
