How to use the worksheets

  1. 01

    Pick the type and level

Choose what to practice and how hard: 3-letter words or 4-bit numbers to start, up to 6-letter words and full bytes.

  2. 02

    Print the sheet

Press Print worksheet. In the print dialog you can also choose Save as PDF to share it digitally.

  3. 03

    Print the answers

Press Print answers for the key. It matches the sheet until you press New problems.

The four worksheets

Start with decoding, which needs only the key, then move on to place values and arithmetic.

  • Decode the words: each line is a word in 8-bit binary, with an a to z key at the bottom of the sheet.
  • Numbers to binary: write numbers in binary using the place values. Level 1 stays within 4 bits.
  • Binary to numbers: the reverse, adding up place values to find each number.
  • Binary addition: column addition with carries. Every sum fits the level, so answers stay the same width.

Ideas for the classroom

Pair the decoding sheet with the name in binary code generator: students write their own name in binary, then swap with a partner to decode. Beads in two colors, one for 0 and one for 1, turn a name into a bracelet.

For number work, the binary numbers chart is a good reference to hand out, and the binary addition guide has worked examples and practice that checks answers on screen.

Frequently asked questions

Are these binary worksheets free?

Yes. There is no sign-up and no limit. Make as many sheets as you need and print them or save them as PDFs.

What age are binary worksheets for?

Decoding 3-letter words needs only reading and a key, so it works for younger students. Converting numbers and binary addition use place values, a better fit once students are comfortable adding.

Do the worksheets come with answers?

Yes. Print answers prints the key for the sheet on screen. The answers are worked out by the same code as the converters on this site.
