How to Read Binary Code

To read binary as text, split it into 8-bit bytes, turn each byte into a number by adding its place values, and look the number up in the ASCII table. Here is each step with a worked example and practice questions.

Updated

The 3-step method

  1. 01

    Split into bytes

    Break the binary into groups of 8 digits. Most messages already have spaces between bytes. If not, count off 8 digits at a time from the left.

  2. 02

    Convert each byte to decimal

    The 8 places are worth 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2 and 1. Add up the values of the places that hold a 1.

  3. 03

    Look up the character

    Find the number in the ASCII table. Capital letters run from 65 to 90, lowercase from 97 to 122, and a space is 32.

Worked example: "Hi"

Here are the three steps applied to 01001000 01101001.

1. Split into bytes

2. Place values of 01001000

2. Place values of 01001000

Reading binary numbers

When binary stands for a number rather than text, step 2 is the whole job. Each place is worth twice the one to its right, so 101101 reads as follows.

Reading binary numbers
BitPlace valueValue
12⁵ = 3232
02⁴ = 160
12³ = 88
12² = 44
02¹ = 20
12⁰ = 11

32 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 45

Tips for reading binary fast

With a little practice you can skip most of the adding.

  • Check the first three bits. 010 usually starts a capital letter, 011 a lowercase letter, and 001 a digit, space or common punctuation mark.
  • Read the last five bits as the letter number. After 010 or 011, the last five bits give the letter's position in the alphabet: 00001 is A or a, 00010 is B or b.
  • Learn the place values by heart. 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1. Once they stick, most bytes take a few seconds.

Practice: decode these words

Each line is one short word in 8-bit binary. Type your answer to check it.

Common mistakes

If your answer comes out as odd symbols, look for one of these.

  • Reading from the wrong end. The leftmost bit is worth the most (128), the rightmost the least (1).
  • Losing a digit. One missing or extra bit shifts every byte after it. Count each group: it should have 8 digits.
  • 7-bit groups. Some puzzles drop the leading 0, leaving 7 digits per letter. The place values then start at 64.
  • Treating a number as text. If the binary is a single long value, it is probably a number. Read it with place values only.

Check your work

Paste any binary into the binary to text converter: the Byte breakdown under the result lists every byte with its decimal value and character. For a quick two-way check, use the binary translator. New to binary? Start with what binary code is.

Frequently asked questions

How do you read binary fast?

Memorize the place values 128, 64, 32, 16, 8, 4, 2, 1, and use the first three bits as a shortcut: `010` usually starts a capital letter and `011` a lowercase one. The last five bits then give the letter's position in the alphabet.

How do you read binary numbers?

Start at the right with a value of 1 and double it for each place to the left. Add the values of the places that hold a 1. For `101101` that is 32 + 8 + 4 + 1 = 45.

How do you read binary letters?

Split the binary into 8-bit bytes, convert each byte to a number, and look the number up in the ASCII table. For example, `01001000` is 72, which is the capital letter H.
