Binary to Hex Converter

Paste binary to get hexadecimal. Under the result, each group of 4 bits sits over the hex digit it becomes.

How to convert binary to hex

  1. 01

    Group the bits in fours

Start from the right. If the leftmost group is short, pad it with zeros: 101111 becomes 0010 1111.

  2. 02

    Look up each group

Each 4-bit group, called a nibble, is one hex digit from 0 to F. Use the table below.

  3. 03

    Write the digits in order

    0010 is 2 and 1111 is F, so 101111 is 2F in hex.

All 16 nibbles. Once you know these by heart, you can read any binary as hex at a glance.

Why programmers use hex

One hex digit stands for exactly four bits, so a byte is always two hex digits. 11011110 is DE, which is far easier to read, type and compare than eight 0s and 1s.

That is why hex shows up in color codes like #FF8800, memory addresses and file dumps. Paste spaced bytes and each one converts on its own, so 01101000 01101001 becomes 68 69.

Frequently asked questions

How do you convert binary to hex?

Split the binary into groups of 4 bits from the right, padding the leftmost group with zeros. Replace each group with its hex digit: `0000` is 0, `1001` is 9, `1010` is A and `1111` is F.

Why is hex used instead of binary?

Hex is binary in shorthand. Each digit is four bits, so it is four times shorter and still converts back exactly. People read hex. Computers still store bits.
