Text to Binary Converter
Type a word, a name or a whole message, and this text to binary converter shows its binary as you type. Pick spaced bytes, one long string or one byte per line.
Text to binary
Worked example: hello in binary
Each letter has an ASCII code. Write each code as 8 bits and put the bytes side by side. Here is how "hello" becomes binary.
| Character | ASCII code | Binary |
|---|---|---|
| h | 104 | 01101000 |
| e | 101 | 01100101 |
| l | 108 | 01101100 |
| l | 108 | 01101100 |
| o | 111 | 01101111 |
Result01101000 01100101 01101100 01101100 01101111
Output options
The converter gives you the same bits in the layout you need.
- Spaced puts a space between bytes, the easiest to read and check.
- No spaces writes one long string, handy for puzzles and short codes.
- One per line puts each byte on its own line, good for lists and printing.
- 8-bit is the standard. 7-bit drops the leading 0 of each byte, as old ASCII did. It only holds basic English characters, so anything else becomes "?".
- Make a card saves your text and its binary as a PNG image you can share.
- Swap sends the binary to the binary to text converter to check it reads back.

Frequently asked questions
How do you write your name in binary?
Type your name in the box above and copy the result. Each letter becomes one byte. For example, Sam is `01010011 01100001 01101101`. A capital letter has a different byte from its lowercase version, so type your name the way you want it shown.
What is the letter A in binary?
Capital A is `01000001`, which is 65 in decimal. Lowercase a is `01100001`, or 97.
Is uppercase different from lowercase in binary?
Yes. Lowercase letters are 32 higher than capitals, so their bytes differ in one bit: A is `01000001` and a is `01100001`.
How do I convert a sentence to binary by hand?
Look up the code of each character in an ASCII table, spaces and punctuation included (a space is 32, or `00100000`). Write each code as 8 bits by adding up powers of 2, then join the bytes in order.
Can I convert emoji to binary?
Yes, in 8-bit mode. The converter uses UTF-8, where most emoji take 4 bytes (32 bits) and a few take 3. In 7-bit mode emoji and accented letters become "?", because 7-bit ASCII has no room for them.
